Catalog Search

A catalog search box should not be included on mobile web sites. Instead, mobile web sites should include a Catalog Link that automatically highlights for your library. Click here for more information on the Catalog Link.

To place a search form on your library's web site, you will need to include a link to JQuery in the <head> of your web page if you have not already done so. If you are not currently linking to JQuery, include the following in the <head> of the web page that will include the search form:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.bccls.org/js/jquery-1.7.2.min.js"></script>

Then, include the following script in the <head> of your web page (make sure that this script is included AFTER the link for JQuery):

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.bccls.org/js/searchPolaris.js?v=2"></script>

Then, you will need to add a search form within the body of your web page.

The basic code for this search form is:

<FORM name="search" id="search" action="javascript:searchPolaris()">
   <input name="query" type="text" id="query"><br />

</FORM>

This basic form includes the ability to highlight for or limit by any BCCLS library.

If you would like to keep the option for patrons to highlight for or limit by a library other than your own, but you would like the search form to automatically default to highlighting for your library, add the following to the end of the <OPTION> tag for your library:

selected="selected"

As an example, the correct form of the line of code above for Allendale would look like this:

<OPTION VALUE="5" selected="selected">Allendale</OPTION>

If you would like to remove the option for patrons to highlight for or limit by a library other than your library, remove the <SELECT> (and all of the <OPTION> tags within it) from the <FORM> above. Then replace it with the following line of code):

<input type="hidden" NAME="whichlibrary" id="whichLibrarySelected" value="YOUR LIBRARY'S CTX #">

You will need to replace the words "YOUR LIBRARY'S CTX #" in the above line of code with your library's CTX #. (Find your library's CTX #)

As an example, the correct version of the line of code above for Allendale would look like this:

<input type="hidden" NAME="whichlibrary" id="whichLibrarySelected" value="5">

If you use the code above to remove the option for patrons to highlight for or limit by a library other than your own, patrons will still have the option to highlight for or limit by your library. If you would like to remove this option and have the form only highlight for your library without the ability to limit, remove the following lines from the <FORM> code:

   <input type="radio" name="highlightorlimit" value="Highlight for" id="highlightorlimit_0" checked="checked">
   <label>Highlight For</label>
   <input type="radio" name="highlightorlimit" value="Limit to" id="highlightorlimit_1">
   <label>Limit To</label>
   <br />

Then, replace them with the following line of code:

   <input type="hidden" name="highlightorlimit" value="Highlight for" id="highlightorlimit_0" checked="checked">

If you would like the search results to open in a new window, add the following line of code after the </SELECT>:

   <input type="hidden" name="newWindowCheck" id="newWindowCheck" value="newWindow">

If you have any questions about adding a search box to your library's web site, please email Laurie for assistance.
